Blood and bodily fluid cleanup

A bad fall or injury can leave more blood than a household cleaner can deal with. A cleanup company removes it, disinfects the area and takes the waste away properly.

Why it is more than a mop job

Blood can carry viruses such as hepatitis B and C and HIV. It also soaks into carpet pad, the gaps between floorboards and the bottom of drywall, so a surface that looks clean may not be.

A disinfectant only works if it stays wet on the surface for the time its label gives. The EPA calls that the contact time. Ask the company which product they use and for how long.

If it happened at work

Employers whose staff could be exposed to blood need a written exposure control plan that covers protective clothing, training and hepatitis B vaccination (OSHA). If you have no such plan, keep staff away from the area and have a company clean it.

Questions to ask

  • What will you remove, and what can be cleaned in place?
  • Which disinfectant do you use, and is it registered for the germs you are worried about?
  • How is the waste bagged and where does it go?
  • Will you give me a written price before you start?
